Steps to Success in CSS

One should go to a single teacher and prepare the subjects according to the syllabus and the past papers of the CSS, as these two things serve as a track for the final exams.

In this article, prerequisites of the CSS exams will be discussed. There are four things which one should take into mind while preparing for the CSS exams.

First Step to Success in CSS

First, the requirement of the CSS is to write simple and correct English. Most of the students come and ask me to prepare them for the tough and complex vocabulary. I usually tell them that they are not going to impress the examiner. The requirement is to communicate your thought and knowledge to the examiner in a simple and effective manner.

Besides, I have seen the results of previous years where majority of the candidates failed in English Essay and English Composition either they did not prepare for English Essay and Composition or they prepared and used very long sentences and were eventually unable to manage the sentences ending in incorrect English. My purpose is not to discourage the students to use rich vocabulary; instead the purpose is that one should rather have grip on the basics of English which I have already discussed in my previous articles. Then candidate should use the relevant and light vocabulary just to communicate thoughts in effective way. For the self-assessment, write an article or essay on any topic. Candidates will get fluency and bolster their vocabulary. After this exercise, candidate should write short essay of the CSS and get those essays checked by a teacher. This exercise will improve your English as the teacher will guide and pinpoint your drawbacks and the area of weakness.

Second step is to prepare for the general knowledge paper, because it is beneficial not only for the preparation of Current Affairs but also for English Essay. Now, the question arises how should one prepare for the general knowledge paper? There are two things. First thing is to consult the last five years papers of the Current Affairs and English Essays then read those articles in the Quarterly Issue. In Quarterly Issue, one needs to read the history, current scenario and the future of the issues. If I talk about Palestine issue, one should read the history, wars of 1965, Camp David Accord, Oslo Accord, etc. and then the current scenario and the suggestion of this issue. After reading the history of the issue, one should read the daily Dawn newspaper to know the updates of the issues.

Nowadays, there is enough material on Siachin issue. One can get the information about duration, history and beginning of the issue in addition to the viewpoints of Pakistan and India. I ask my students during the class to prepare in this style.

For the self-assessment, write an article or essay on any topic. Candidates will get fluency and bolster their vocabulary. After this exercise, candidate should write short essay of the CSS and get those essays checked by a teacher.

Third Step to Success in CSS

The third step is to opt for scoring subjects. The idea behind opting for these optional subjects is that a significant number of candidates qualify the written exams while the seats are limited. In such case, the aggregate marks for the written exams are counted. If a candidate gets 715 or plus marks then he will be able to get the department of his choice. In this case, opting for the scoring subjects is the prerequisite to success in CSS exams. During my teaching experience of many years, I have seen a number of candidates who opt for Indo-Pak History, Political Science, Muslim Law, etc. but, the scoring pattern of these subjects are really fluctuating ending in failure of the candidate in getting the desired post. Therefore, it is my humble request to those candidates not to opt for such subjects and do not play with their future. Even when I guided many students who availed themselves of two chances of the CSS, they were stubbornly stuck to their point — for not selecting the scoring subjects — that they had read enough to tackle any unseen questions. But my question is that if these subjects are not scoring how can one be able to get marks and the CSS is only the game of higher marks.

Forth Step to Success in CSS

Fourthly, taking self-test in the end of each subject is compulsory as this practice will help you get higher marks in each subject of the CSS. Besides this, candidates are able to know their drawbacks and weaknesses. I noticed hundreds and thousands of times that a CSS aspirant usually writes first time when he appears in the CSS exams. In plain words, one is playing with his/her future. So the criteria should be to take test of each subject. My those students who take tests get more marks as compared to those students who do not take tests. Similarly, this exercise will help get 10 to 20 marks extra in each subject. Here one can notice that there is competition of marks of even 1 and even points. This technique will take you on the safer side.

In the end, do not be confused. Go to a single teacher and stop running from one teacher to the other merely to test the knowledge of the teachers. I have seen this thing and this thing is harmful. In fact, ultimately the candidates are at the sheer loss, and they are confused after taking guidance from number of teachers and leave the CSS saying that it is impossible to pass the CSS exams. These are the students who misguide the newcomers and make newcomers’ mind suspicious about the CSS. My advice is that one should go to a single teacher and prepare the subjects according to the syllabus and the past papers of the CSS, as these two things serve as a track for the final exams.
